SANS 10400-XA:2021 specifies thermal-performance requirements for roof and ceiling assemblies according to South Africa’s energy zones. The required performance is expressed as an R-value, rather than simply specifying one insulation thickness for every product and every building.

Different insulation materials can require different thicknesses to achieve a similar R-value because their thermal conductivity differs.
